Exstasis: Diving Into Magic
Exstasis is an immersive projection mapping project made by Odd Agency into the Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Palermo. The performance explores the polysemic nature of the term “ecstasy”. We often perceive technology as a means of isolating us, leaving each of us alone in front of the screen of our device. Exstasis is an experience of collective transcendence in which technology connects people, bringing us on a journey outside ourselves, into contact with mystery and wonder, towards the very roots of our being. After the extraordinary success obtained in the edition of 2019 ad October of 2020, Exstasis returns to enchant the audience of the Church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria with a 360° projection mapping remastered version in 4K, immersing us into a completely virtual environment made by visual stimuli, music and light effects, breaking the existential routine of “here and now”.

The 5 stages of mysticism
The immersive projection mapping show will be articulated in 5 acts, retracing the 5 stages of mysticism outlined by Evelyn Underhill, an Anglo-Catholic writer of the 20th century: the awakening, in which the everyday life begins to be interrupted by the awareness of the absolute reality, the purification, that is the progressive rejection of needs, habits, compulsions, addictions, worldly attitudes. Through this path there is access to illumination, the intuition about implicit truths in nature, in terms of awareness of the deepest aspects of the reality. The last obstacle, but also a necessary stage towards the ascesis will be the dark night of the soul, a dramatic moment in which we realize our finiteness and our being something else from God. Finally there is the union, the total communion with God, the infinity and the whole.
